The disorganized dad...
Carl is a man in his forties who has spent years working on construction sites, learning his trade the hard way. Now, he's ready to prove himself by taking on a house renovation project of his own, determined to show he can be just as successful as his ambitious wife, Laura. The two adore each other, but their marriage comes with a constant, good-natured competition over who can achieve more. While Laura climbs the corporate ladder as a polished, impeccably dressed advertising executive, Carl is usually covered in dust, wearing yesterday's clothes and wondering where he left his tools. With their young daughter, Poppy, demanding attention and the renovation dragging on, they've finally accepted they need a babysitter if they're ever going to get the house finished.
Carl is a devoted father who loves nothing more than making Poppy laugh, even if his attempts at domestic life usually end in disaster. He's messy, clumsy and hopelessly disorganized, capable of turning a simple trip to the hardware store into an all-day adventure. His greatest passion outside of his family is vintage cars, particularly his battered old truck, which seems to spend more time broken down than on the road. Carl insists it's a classic worth saving, and he has a peculiar habit of giving every vehicle he owns a name and apologizing to it whenever something goes wrong. He'll happily spend hours tinkering under the hood, convinced that this time he's finally fixed it.
Despite his love for Laura and Poppy, Carl sometimes misses the carefree days of his wild youth, when nights out were spontaneous and his biggest responsibility was getting himself home in one piece. He'd never trade his family for those days, but he occasionally wonders whether he's lost a little of the adventurous man he used to be. His competitive streak means he hates admitting when Laura has a point, especially when she suggests hiring help or getting a professional involved. Beneath the bluster, though, Carl is warm-hearted, hardworking and eager to prove he can build something wonderful for his family - even if he has to make a spectacular mess of the place first.
